with Kelsey Burkman

Hey there! I’m so glad you found your way to my blog and are interested in learning more about me and my small biz.
I help teachers design simple, beautiful and student-centered classrooms on a budget while improving mindset and productivity. I post tons of free content on my blog and social media sites and will (soon!) be offering a course to help teachers transform their classrooms into functional and beautiful spaces.
If you are a veteran teacher whose classroom needs a little TLC, a newer teacher who wants to create a beautiful classroom on a budget, or maybe you are feeling overwhelmed in your classroom and want to improve mindset and productivity, you are in the right place!
To learn more about how you can get started making your classroom simple, beautiful and student-centered, download my free guide called 7 Steps to a Simpler Classroom at the bottom of this page.

How it all started
I am an upper elementary teacher from Southern California with four years of classroom experience. I’ve taught 3rd, 4th and 5th grade, but my heart is definitely in 5th!
Like I’m sure many of you have experienced, I became extremely burnt out from teaching in just my second year. I was showing up early and leaving late so I could plan lessons, grade papers and answer emails. During the school day, I felt like I was constantly redirecting behavior and waiting, with every last ounce of patience, for students to listen and follow directions.
My mind started wandering to other careers. I lived in San Francisco at the time, so most people I knew worked at some tech start up, and all I would see were their flexible work hours, comped dinners and office kitchens stocked with every flavor of La Croix. I got caught in the comparison game and couldn’t help but think that I could be doing something more. I could be making more money.
The grass definitely looked greener on the other side. I knew I was meant for more.
I did a little soul searching (okay, a lot), and learned how to conquer my mindset. In the process, I continued to think about my strengths, what brings me joy, and why I became a teacher in the first place.
Fast forward a month or so, I began creating my own resources to sell on Teachers Pay Teachers. I started my teacher Instagram and began connecting with other teachers who promoted positivity. And now, I have my own website and blog. These are the things that bring me joy. Creation, connection, and being part of a community. I’m investing in myself, and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I hope you’ll follow along on my journey, and I’d love to follow yours, too!

I believe the classroom is the third teacher.

After parents and teachers, a student’s environment is their third teacher. This means that the learning environment can impact a student’s success much like a parent or a teacher. For this reason, it is crucial that we as teachers are intentional with our classroom design.
It is my goal to share the research, tips and tricks when it comes to designing a beautiful classroom with students’ best interest in mind. I would love for you to subscribe to my blog to receive the latest updates as well as my FREE guide, 7 Steps to a Simpler Classroom.
