This Mother’s Day gift is something mom’s will actually keep forever!

Make a backdrop with bulletin board paper, cut out “I love you because...” with an @officialcricut and use a felt letter board for students to hold with a word to describe their mom or other important woman in their life. Print the photos & stick em in cheap frames from Amazon!

Pro tip❕Have students write their word down beforehand on a sticky note. Group students with the same word together, so you don’t have to change the letter board every time! Huge time saver 👏🏼

Some new friends have started following along (hi, I appreciate you) so I thought introductions should be in order!

🌿 I’m Kelsey & the human behind Teaching in my Right Mind. You will mostly see me post classroom decor inspo, tips and research supporting simple + neutral classroom design, but I will also share upper elementary teaching ideas (and a sprinkle of home decor since 100% of you voted yes😆).

4️⃣ This is my 4th year of teaching. I’ve taught 4th grade for two years and a 4/5 combo class for one year. This year, I taught 3rd grade for a few months and am now teaching 4th, 5th and 6th grade RTI. We recently moved which is why I’m all over the place this year. Any other teachers in a weird transition phase? 🙋🏻‍♀️

☀️ I was born and raised in Orange County, California. I went to UC Santa Barbara for my undergrad, teaching credential and Masters, then my fiancé and I lived in San Francisco for three years post grad school. We just recently bought a house back in OC and are so happy to be home! 🤗

Unpopular opinion: Rainbow is NOT a great choice f

Unpopular opinion: Rainbow is NOT a great choice for a classroom color scheme.

That being said... I can get behind some rainbow organization, like organizing your book spines, markers and other supplies in rainbow order. However, I am not a fan of rainbow classroom decor. I find it incredibly busy and over-stimulating, and it could be affecting your students’ ability to learn & focus.

With more and more teachers returning to the classroom soon, now is the perfect time to make those classroom upgrades you’ve been thinking about!

Am I the only one whose school required them to display the standards for mathematical practice in their room? 🙋🏻‍♀️

The district-provided posters were soo hideous that I didn’t hang them up even though I was supposed to 🤭 #oops

That’s why I created my own MP posters ☝🏼🙌🏼

This set is designed to match my Earthy Tones classroom color palette 🌿 and the standards are written in language the students can understand. I used to hang the MPs under my whiteboard, where students could see them while sitting on the rug during math lessons. I would ask students at the end of the lesson which MP they thought they used that day, and they would show me the number on their fingers. I found this to be a great way for students to reflect & self-assess their thinking strategies in math!

Thanks to the wonderful @jumpingjaxdesigns (and members of @kaysemorris CEO Teacher Academy for recommending them) I have a website up and running 💻✨

It’s sort of ironic how I ended up down the “teacherpreneur” path. In the spring of 2019, my second year of teaching, I became extremely burnt out. I would sit in my car in the mornings not wanting to get out. I would come in early and stay late to prep lessons, grade papers and answer emails. During the day, I felt like I was constantly redirecting behavior and waiting with every last ounce of patience for students to cooperate. I lived in San Francisco at the time, and I began comparing my job to friends working at tech companies with their flexible work hours and office kitchens stocked with every flavor of La Croix. The grass definitely looked greener, and I knew I was meant for more.

I began to do some reflecting on why I got into teaching in the first place, what my strengths were and how I could improve. I stopped believing “things will be better when x, y or z” and began to take control of my mindset. I began taking more time for myself and doing things I love ~ like being creative. Creation, connection and being part of a community are the things that bring me joy. Creating resources and teaching content has not only helped me financially, but also mentally. I’m excited to share with you today the 5th and final classroom color palette!

This one is simple and easy to pull off, which is why it’s called the Traditional Classroom Color Palette. I intentionally chose colors that are easy to find in everyday classroom items, like bins, pocket charts, supplies and other things that you probably already have in your classroom. I also intentionally used a typical student chair to match with this scheme, since not everyone is going to go out and buy specialty chairs for their classroom (and you don’t need to in order to make it cute)!

One of my favorite tips when it comes to designing your classroom is to choose a color palette that incorporates items you can’t or don’t want to change, like furniture, wall colors, chairs or rugs. By doing this, you can save lots of $$$ and keep everything cohesive!
